Who I am
I get questions as to who I am. I'm a bit bemused by this as the issue is important, I'm not. But for those that are interested, I just simply say my name is Jeremy Mowe, a concerned resident of the City of Subiaco.
I looked into and had a bit to say when the merger with the City of Nedlands and the City of Subiaco was being discussed. It made me aware of how special a situation we have with the City of Subiaco. Although I don't agree with everything our Local Government has done, I'm impressed with the good outcomes that our councillors and mayor can achieve because I think their heart is in the right place. Also, we have fantastic members of our community, who take an interest in our Local Government and highlight to other residents when we have issues. The value of our Local Government was displayed when we stopped the State Government plan to turn Rosalie Park (our sporting fields) into a carpark!
I think the Dadour amendments in the Local Government Act are an excellent piece of legislation. It provides the electors in a Local Government area the ability to stop an amalgamation. Even given the current provisions, it would be a big ask to get enough of the community to take part in a poll. I believe if we allow the Government to remove or weaken our powers, we will put at risk the real strengths of our Local Governments for no significant gain.
I've set up the petition and the website as my way of doing the best that I can do to retain our rights in the Local Government Act. None of this will stop the Local Government Minster from simply submitting a proposal to the Local Government Advisory Board. At least with the Dadour amendments in place, it is possible that the question comes to us, the electors.
